This Is England
By Mike | May 20, 2008

Hiya gang. So I’m thinking that I’m going to start doing a regular post in which I give you a heads up on the best movies that you’ve probably never seen. What the hell, right? I can’t think of anything else to write about.
My first movie in this series is This Is England. I don’t remember how exactly I heard about this movie but I’m really glad I did. This 2006 film is based on writer/director Shane Meadows real life experiences growing up in 1983 England. The film centers around Shaun(the small kid in the center up there) who is struggling to fit in in a new town after his father is killed in the Falkland War. After being bullied at school one day Shaun does what any of us would do in his situation - join up with a gang of skin heads. But don’t worry though, these are nice skin heads. All is good and right in the world until Combo shows up after just being released from prison and things start go down hill. : (, I put a frowny face there just so you’d realize how bad things get.
This movie is ridiculously good and won a ton of best picture awards over seas but went largely unnoticed here. I’m not even sure if this got a theatrical release in the US. My only complaint with this movie was that the accents in this movie were thick as fuck but I got over it. Definitely worth adding to your Netflix queue.
